- The criminal justice system in the Songhai empire was based off of Islam's laws and structure.
- Laws were mainly enforced by local Qadis who would maintain order and ensure that Sharia Law was being practiced.
- An extra Qadi would be summoned to handle disputes between merchants.
- The Qadi was appointed by the king and had the ability to pardon unless in cases of treason, which the King would handle.
- The empire had many prisons
- Enforcers, or Assaramunidios, would carry out the sentencing.
- Jurists were usually part of the academic committee.
